I feel lucky to have found Cathy. She was wonderful to work with (and still is). She is a really hard worker, an amazing graphic artist and just all around talented. She is among the best out there. One thing that was very important to me was she was always available as she designed my site. She kept me involved every step of the way so I felt like I was part of the design process. She doesn't settle for anything less, and wants her clients to be happy with the outcome. I can't say enough about Cathy!
Initially, I also looked into going with a Xxxxx! store or other ecommerce templated method. I realized that my store would have no personality and look like most of the others. Also looking further into these ready made ecommerce stores, there seemed to be other fees, such as them getting a % of your sales etc. In the end, my site stands on its own and I am not forever indebted to sharing a percentage of my sales with the Xxxxx! or anyone else. This was a more economical path to take.
As far as approximated fees go, there is: web hosting $6/mo shopping cart $6/mo merchant account $30/mo + fees associated with credit card transactions (plus one time set up <$200)
I am learning (with ease) to maintain my site with a few tutoring sessions with Cathy. I strongly recommend hiring her for your project.
